MASTERPIECES IN GRAPHICS

Frank Brunner

Frank Brunner (b. 1971, Kristiansand) graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, the Ilya Repin Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Yale University, where he earned his master's degree in 2000. Brunner had his first solo exhibition at the Stenersen Museum in 2001. Since then, he has regularly exhibited at Galleri Haaken in Oslo. He has had numerous exhibitions both in Norway and abroad, including at Galerie Zidoun in Paris, Høvikodden Art Center, Haugar Vestfold Art Museum in Tønsberg, Drammen Art Museum, Cynthia Broan Gallery in New York, Sørlandets Art Museum, and Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin. He has a permanent gallery in New York and permanent agreements with galleries in Luxembourg and France. Brunner often paints in large formats. His motifs often have an ambiguous quality, where the figuratively tangible is accompanied by a more abstract feeling or mood. The atmosphere is often created by light and shadows. We often call Brunner the master of light, whether in his paintings or his exquisitely executed etchings. The viewer is drawn into a world where they must complete the story themselves. The artist provides hints that someone is on their way somewhere; across a bridge in Grünerløkka, up an escalator in New York, or embarking on a sea voyage. Other times, it is the power of the view, as in the various interpretations of Oslo seen from Ekeberg or through a window in a gallery or restaurant in another major city. Recently, Brunner has also explored the moods created by light from outside to inside, as seen in several pergola, greenhouse, and winter garden motifs featured in this exhibition.
