MASTERPIECES IN PRINTS

Frans Widerberg

Frans Widerberg (1934–2017) is considered one of Norway's foremost artists. He worked as a painter, printmaker, and draftsman, and also explored sculpture, glass, and ceramics. Widerberg was known for his energetic, expressive style and his distinctive use of strong primary colors – especially yellow, red, and blue. His motifs often revolve around riders, centaurs, and elongated human figures soaring in open, timeless landscapes. The images are filled with light, movement, and a dreamlike atmosphere. The themes are universal and human: zest for life, love, longing, and emotions. Widerberg was a clear advocate for figurative painting at a time when non-figurative art dominated. Along with Odd Nerdrum and others, he challenged contemporary art views and developed a personal artistic language that eventually became his signature. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, his expression grew stronger, formats larger, and figures more abstracted. The characteristic "Widerberg universe" took shape. Later, he further enhanced the metaphysical and spiritual elements in his paintings. During his career spanning more than 50 years, Widerberg exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous collections. His art is characterized by intensity, light, and a strong visual poetry that continues to move audiences.
