Born in 1996 – based in Oslo. Ami Mellstrand is a Swedish artist living in Oslo, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in printmaking at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO). She has a strong fascination with the tactile qualities of print, and challenges the boundaries of what a graphic work can be – as it moves from paper to textile, from surface to form. Her motifs often revolve around the female body, frequently in unusual and vulnerable positions. She draws inspiration from her own reflection and from the way clothing drapes over the skin – what she might prefer not to see, but still explores. The question she poses is whether what feels uncomfortable can be made beautiful. By printing on fabric, she adds both softness and volume to her works. She wants her prints to have a body, a physical presence, while still retaining their identity as graphic art.
