YOUTH ARENA
Maximus Emrat Dørje
Born in 2009 – lives in Sarpsborg. Max was born and raised at Soli Brug, a family-run private gallery established in 1978. There, he met many artists and saw countless exhibitions.
Max started drawing seriously at the age of ten, after winning a school talent competition with his drawing "Big City." At twelve, he created his first print, "A day in South America," which quickly sold out. He continued making drawings, often of nameless bar and restaurant scenes, before developing his concept "Club Papiros" in the fall of 2023. His debut exhibition took place at Soli Brug in November 2023, when Max was 14 years old—and it sold out completely, both prints and originals.
Max starts by sketching with pencil on A3 watercolor paper. He then outlines with a thin felt-tip pen, colors with markers, and prepares the drawing for printing.
His drawings revolve around Club Papiros—a fictional American club concept rooted in the 1980s. The motifs are playful, colorful, and detailed, populated by both people and animals in decadent settings inspired by the style and atmosphere of that era.
Choosing the 1980s as a framework comes naturally to Max, who—like his father—believes the music was best back then.
He draws inspiration from cartoons like Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Rocky by Martin Kellerman, as well as movies such as Scarface, The Color of Money, Bond films, Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Casino. He is also influenced by artists who have exhibited at Soli Brug, especially Guttestreker, Johan Reisang, and Pushwagner.
With a father and grandfather who are above-average food and wine enthusiasts, Max has picked up many impressions from bar and restaurant visits both at home and abroad.
The name Papiros comes from an internal idea about starting a paper company to produce the perfect paper towel. The name was often mentioned in the family kitchen before Max began drawing Club Papiros. When he asked what the bar in his drawing should be called, someone—mostly as a joke, in a deep advertising voice—answered, "How about Club Papiros?" And it stuck.
Now, with nearly 500 works sold, no one doubts the choice.
Max plans to continue drawing alongside school, soccer, and friends.
He is represented by Soli Brug Gallery, The Oslo Gallery, and Mankovsky Gallery in Gothenburg.
