YOUTH ARENA

Per-André Nielsen

Born in 1992 – based in Oslo. Per-André Nielsen (b. 1992) is a Norwegian artist who primarily works within the figurative tradition, using drawing, oil painting, and lithography. He alternates between large toned surfaces and delicate lines, and his motifs have a retrospective feel, with both breaks and connections between styles and eras. Qualities and aesthetic variations from the Renaissance, natural history illustration, and pulp magazines are revitalized and paraphrased in new expressions. Beauty, freedom, and imagination are united and brought into the real world. Several of his works explore human culture and its impact on nature. They highlight our unnatural distance from wildlife and how we often attribute human roles and traits to animals. The works appear immediately beautiful but also contain disquieting undertones. Nielsen was educated at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, the Norwegian School of Creative Studies, and OsloMet. He has studied at the Nerdrum School in Helsingborg under Odd Nerdrum, interned with Sverre Malling, and has had several exhibitions both in Norway and abroad.
