Tonje Paus

Born 1990 – based in Oslo Tonje Paus is a Norwegian ceramicist and artist based in Oslo, known for her hand-built porcelain sculptures that challenge our perception of everyday objects. She holds a bachelor’s degree in medium- and material-based art from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2016–2019), and has previously apprenticed as a ceramicist in Barcelona. Paus’s artistic practice revolves around themes such as function, value, status, and hierarchy. She recreates objects like plastic cups, kitchen utensils, and bicycle helmets in porcelain—a material associated with exclusivity—thus questioning the role of materialism and how our choice of materials affects our perception of an object’s value. She has exhibited at venues including SKOG Art Space and Bærum Kunsthall. In 2024, she received the Bærum Municipality Art Prize for her work Bicycle Helmet, which was acquired for the municipal collection.
