Baptismal font inspired by the tree of life

For Oslo Cathedral, Hadeland Glassverk’s Head of Design Maud Gjeruldsen Bugge has designed a baptismal font in brass and glass – a beautiful and symbolically rich object inspired by the tree of life, which is a recurring motif in the church’s decoration. The base of the font is shaped like a tree that grows and embraces the baptism – a poetic image of new life and belonging. The baptismal bowls are mouth-blown and hand-polished at Hadeland Glassverk, and are produced in six colors that correspond to the liturgical color palette of the church year. This allows parents to choose the color for the baptism themselves – a detail that gives both aesthetic and personal significance to the ceremony. This special project combines tradition, symbolism, and Norwegian glass craftsmanship in a style that feels both modern and timeless.
