YOUTH ARENA

Cathrine Alice Liberg

Cathrine Alice Liberg (b. 1988 in Lørenskog) is an artist and printmaker living and working in Oslo. She holds an MFA in medium- and material-based art from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2019). That same year, she received the KoMask European Masters Printmaking Award in Antwerp, as well as the Norske Grafikere Fund’s printmaking prize at the Autumn Exhibition. She has also been nominated for the Queen Sonja Print Award (2022) and the QSPA Inspirational Award (2020 and 2017). Drawing on her own Norwegian-Singaporean family background, the current and historical relationship between Europe and Asia has become a natural starting point in Liberg’s artistic practice. Using traditional printmaking techniques such as lithography, mezzotint, and copper etching, she explores themes related to migration, global trade, cultural hybridity, and exoticization—topics that have largely been made possible through printmaking’s ability to spread text, images, and maps. Over the past year, she has also focused on the Arctic as a global stage for trade and nation-building, and how new geopolitical issues arise as the ice melts and new northern "Silk Roads" emerge between Europe and Asia. At the core of her projects always lies her own family history, and the idea that personal family stories are really fragments of larger global narratives. In several projects, she works with photographs of ancestors or invents portraits where none exist. She is especially interested in the loss of memories and cultural understanding that occurs between generations as a result of migration, and how cultural shifts arise when one culture merges with another.
