Paulus Church, Oslo

All the original lighting in Paulus Church was removed and discarded during renovations in the 1970s. We had the opportunity to meet with the project manager from the Oslo Church Council, and agreed to reconstruct the original lamps from 1890. The basis for new drawings was an old black-and-white photo, as well as a cross-section from the old building plans. Many hours were spent at the drawing board and making numerous visits to the church for control measurements. At one point, we lowered a basketball to ensure the correct size for the domes. At the glassworks, we have an old mold storage containing hundreds of lamp dome molds. With the help of the old carpenter, we managed to find the original dome molds. The chandelier domes are blown in the original mold, but for the wall lamps we had to make a new one since the old one had been destroyed. The brass lamps have many small details, and it was a demanding task to draw them and then compare them to the old black-and-white photo. The end result is fantastic, and the church has regained its jewels, elevating the church interior to one of Norway’s most beautiful.
