MASTERPIECES IN GRAPHIC ART
Alvilde Jerpeseth
Alvilde Jerpseth (b. 1992) is a self-taught painter from Oslo, now residing in Palermo, Italy. She began painting in 2021–22 and works within a figurative style characterized by stoic figures and an expressive use of color.
Her artistic practice is rooted in figurative painting and driven by an interest in simplification, symbolism, and color as both an emotional and structural force. She creates scenes populated by quiet, withdrawn figures placed in a cosmic, non-realistic universe. Through the use of strong primary colors, flat shapes, and deliberate distortions, she reinterprets reality, allowing the images to exist in a field of tension between the recognizable and the mythical.
Although her works are inspired by modernist and expressionist painting, she uses these references as tools to explore how historical painterly strategies can be activated in a contemporary context.
Themes such as femininity, intimacy, duality, and human presence recur in her works, often conveyed through subdued movements and open relationships between the figures. The tension between control and expression is central to her process, along with the balance between formal clarity and emotional openness.
Jerpseth holds a Master's degree in design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) and has exhibited in Oslo, Bergen, Paris, Berlin, and Palermo, among other places.
