MASTERPIECES IN GRAPHIC ART
Lars Elling
Lars Elling (b. 1966) is a Norwegian visual artist, printmaker, and author, educated at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design (1988–1992). He has distinguished himself as a distinctive voice in Norwegian contemporary art.
For many years, Elling worked as a newspaper cartoonist and book illustrator, and has published several award-winning books in collaboration with, among others, Bjørn Sortland, Tor Edvin Dahl, and Gro Dahle. For his work with books, he has received numerous accolades, including gold in Årets vakreste bøker (The Year's Most Beautiful Books).
Since the early 2000s, he has dedicated himself to painting full-time, often using the egg tempera technique. His works are characterized by a cinematic and photographic quality, where the motifs appear as staged moments – visual narratives with open narratives and underlying tension. The images balance the realistic and the dreamlike, inviting the viewer to complete the story themselves.
Elling has had extensive exhibition activity both nationally and internationally, with solo exhibitions in Oslo, New York, London, and Berlin, among other places. His works have been acquired by institutions such as the National Museum, Trondheim Art Museum, the European Commission, and Arts Council Norway. He is represented by Galleri Brandstrup and lives and works in Oslo and Cape Town.
